British Swimming Championships – SOS Top Tips

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

So its the highlight  of the British Swimming Calendar, and you are stuck at work. We know keeping up to speed with all the latest results from Ponds Forge can be a struggle. So here are our top tips for keeping track of whats going on in the Pool, wile your at the office:

  • BBC -  TV  coverage seems unusually poor, however the 5Live  team, Steve Parry, Bob Ballard and Karen Pickering are on hand to keep you company. Tune in daily  from 1800, either online or on your wireless.
  • Twitter – BBC’s Nick Hope is providing a feed – I’m not sure how regular this will be, although day 1 seemed to go well for him. Follow him here.
  • The good old live score board – see it here, although its constant need to refresh does get tiring!
  • Ponds Forge – if none of the above are good enough for you, get over to Sheffield and take in a session or two.

Pool-Mate

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

We were very keen to try out our new Pool-Mate but couldnt wait until we got to the pool so I persuaded my colleague Wendy to ’swim’ up and down the road outside the shop – and she did! Using the lamp posts to turn and glide away from she proceeded to swim several lengths each of breaststroke and frontcrawl before deciding that she looked a bit silly and stopped. Later that day I got to the pool, tried it out for real and was very impressed. I had only swum a few lengths before curiosity got the better of me and I had to stop and check it was working ok – which of course it was. It produces some fascinating data including a swimming efficiency score which is calculated using strokes per length, time taken and distance swum. Mine fell into the middle of ‘average’ which was not too bad as I kept stopping to play with the watch. It also calculates the number of calories used which helps justify the glass of wine when you get home!
We have a Pool-Mate available to lend to any swimmers who can pop into our retail shop in Broadstone, however I suggest you ring first to ensure that it is not already out on loan.

Wild Swimming

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

Its hard not to like cheeky geordie Robson Green, and following his extreme fishing adventures, i was looking forward to his Wild Swimming Adventures on ITV last night.

part2While his technique looked rather weak the content of the show was quite good fun. Two things stuck me during the first of this two part series, firstly the sheer insanity and of swimmer and an environmentalist Lewis Pugh, who has made a name for himself swimming in waters that are simply far too cold! I see from his website the next goal is to swim a glacial lake under the summit of Mount Everest. Thats a lake at 5,300meters, think about that next time your in a competition training pool!
Secondly how lucky we are to have such an array of wild swimming here on our doorstep – maybe this is something we should all do – i loved the line from The Outdoor Swimming Association “swimmers have too long been held in chlorined captivity” !!

And lastly it was nice to see some local swimmers featured, well done to you!

Part 2 follows next week Tuesday 15th December, 2009
